Posted: August 23, 2013 by essince in Cleveland

Cleveland’s own, Veeno has been making moves this past year and recently released his album, “Myself as I know it”. We caught up with Veeno about the new album, his influences, and more. Check it out and listen to the album at the bottom.

1) How did you get into music? How long have been rhyming?

I got into rhyming when I was young, probably in elementary school is when I first noticed I could put together a pretty good poem. My teachers took notice of this as well and always complimented me on not only my rhyming skills, but my ability to write a well composed story with substance. I always had the mind of a dreamer and my imagination would constantly wander. I didn’t actually start writing raps until I was about 16. I used to write my rhymes in the back of my playbook I used when I played football in high school. Me and some of my friends would also battle for fun in our garages and we even used to record the battles on my video camera and show them off to the rest of our friends in the neighborhood. This continued as just hobby until I was about 19 when I was approached by a friend with the opportunity to actually start recording music with our friend Eric. I was totally against it at first because I didn’t really see any reason on why we should even start recording. I was in college at the time and since we would just be having fun and not really taking it seriously, I didn’t see any point in starting. I eventually agreed to just try it out, and I’m glad I did. It sparked something inside of me, after we started recording I could never stop and I suddenly became the most dedicated person out of the group of guys that were recording there. It only lasted a few months before my friend Eric moved, but it was the catalyst that got me going. Ever since then I have been recording music.

2) Who are your inspirations for music?

I can’t lie one of my biggest inspirations has to be Eminem. I feel he always spits from his heart in a majority of his songs and pours his all into almost every track. Bone Thugs N Harmony were also a huge influence seeing as they were from Cleveland. My older cousins were always playing all of their CD’s non stop and they were the first rap artists I was introduced to at the age of 7. Seeing a group of guys who lived in the same city as me making records with Biggie, Pac and some heavy hitters in the industry was crazy. Pac was also a huge influence as well because he talked about real life shit that he witnessed his family and people in his own neighborhood go through on an every day basis. Some other key influences were Jay-Z, NaS, Scarface, DMX, Three 6 Mafia, Ludacris, Nelly, Chamillionaire and Outkast. All of these artists consistently put out great music when I was growing up and were all a huge influence for me to start rhyming. Seeing these artists literally come from nothing and be able to create music for the masses to hear always inspired me and convinced me that I could do the same.

3) What are your goals as an MC?

Honestly the sky is the limit at this point. I work closely with a team of great artists in Cleveland and we all strive to put out quality music. In the past year I dropped a mixtape, I was featured on multiple major blog sites throughout Ohio for my mixtape as well as multiple single releases and a feature for my “Back 2 Cleveland” video on a St. Louis blog site. I was also featured on a DJ Steph Floss mixtape,, I performed in Austin, TX for SXSW 2013, received a placement on a Coast 2 Coast Indie top 50 mixtape, and of course last but not least I released my debut album “Myself as I Know It” on August 20th. This year I definitely want to hit more shows out of state and really push the album hard because I feel it is my best project to date and I really want the world to hear it.

4) Describe the new album.

“Myself as I Know It” is a personal album, but it is very relatable. I speak on a wide range of problems and situations people deal with on an everyday basis, especially other artists like me who are dying to be heard. There are tracks on my album that people can party and get hype to, but there are also tracks that reveal more of a darker side. Everyone has their good and bad days and go through ups and downs every day, I feel thats what my album is in a sense. It’s a series of ups and downs that like life can change rapidly. I tried to make something for every one on this album, and judging by the feed back I have been receiving, I did just that.
